MADRID SUMMIT 2024

5 jul. 2024 09:30-18:00

The Madrid Summit is organizing a series of panels and discussions around the LGBTQIA+ reality. The 6th Edition of Madrid Summit will take place at the offices of the European Parliament and the European Commission in Spain, on Friday, July 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Madrid Summit is MADO's human rights conference that started in 2017, the year of WorldPride in Madrid. Since then, we have organized a series of meetings and dialogues around the LGBTQIA+ reality, focusing on the situation in countries like Poland or Ukraine, the violations of human rights there and how to demonstrate solidarity from a city and region that is advanced in this matter such as Madrid. This year it will be different.

Human rights violations, legal setbacks or the infiltration of transphobia in institutions is not something that is only seen in Eastern Europe or developing countries. It is something that is seen throughout Europe and beyond, both here and in Sweden, Italy or Argentina. It is an organized movement with resources and we have to learn from activists in other countries to be prepared.

Sign up to participate with us as we look for allies who are facing the same challenges faced in Madrid. We are going to involve the European and international institutions once again, and make visible the human rights of the collective in the MADO. The VI Edition of Madrid Summit will take place at the offices of the European Parliament and the European Commission in Spain, on Friday, July 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

LEARNINGS AND CHALLENGES FROM THE WORLD OF QUEER DATA

Across the world there is a lack of official data on LGBTQIA+ people and for some identities of the community, it simply doesn’t exist. This means that large parts of the community are invisible or underrepresented by public authorities who don’t have the tools they need to take into consideration the needs and realities of LGBTQIA+ people. In this panel we will explore various data sets that do exist and explore how they are used to advance LGBTQIA+ rights. In addition, the panel will consider examples of good practice in the production and use of data abroad that’s done in an inclusive manner.

SETBACKS IN LGBTQIA+ RIGHTS AND HOW TO REGAIN THEM

In recent years, there has been a rollback in the rights of LGTBIQA+ people in various areas and regions. From the exclusion of trans people from elite sports, through the ‘LGTBI-free zones’, legislation that has cut rights, to the criminalization of homosexuality, our rights have been under attack. This panel brings together some of the leading voices in the fight against the erosion of LGTBIQA+ rights to explore where and what is happening, what these setbacks have in common, and what is being done to combat them.
